Communities don’t become stronger by accident.
They become stronger when neighbors know one another. When local businesses succeed. When people volunteer their time. When leaders step forward. When stories are told. When relationships are built.
That’s why We Are Local was created.
We Are Local began with a simple belief:
Strong communities are built by connected people.
For years, I had the privilege of serving others—first in the United States Air Force and Air National Guard, and later as a small business owner for more than 25 years. Throughout those experiences, one lesson became clear:
Communities thrive when people choose to invest in one another.
As I traveled throughout Montana and spent time meeting with business owners, nonprofit leaders, elected officials, veterans, entrepreneurs, and residents, I noticed something.
There were incredible people doing incredible things.
But too few people knew their stories.
Many local businesses struggled to be seen.
Community organizations worked tirelessly with little recognition.
Positive stories were often overshadowed by negativity.
At the same time, I saw something else.
Whenever people gathered over coffee, attended a community event, volunteered together, or simply took the time to learn about one another, something changed.
Relationships formed.
Businesses grew.
Ideas turned into partnerships.
Communities became stronger.
That realization became the foundation for We Are Local.
Not as another media company.
Not as another marketing business.
But as a community growth organization.
What We Do

Through The Big Sky Standard, we provide trusted journalism, thoughtful interviews, and clearly labeled opinion that helps keep our communities informed.
Through Discover Local, we celebrate the businesses, restaurants, nonprofits, events, and people that make our communities unique.
Through Coffee and Business (CAB), we help people build meaningful relationships before they ever exchange business cards.
Through our Growth Coaching programs, we help businesses and leaders develop the tools they need to succeed.
Through the We Are Local Network, Community Partners invest in a shared vision of stronger communities, thriving local businesses, and trusted local storytelling.
